PLA vs ABS 3D Printing

PLA and ABS are the two most common FDM filaments. PLA is easy to print, rigid and biodegradable; ABS is tougher and heat-resistant but harder to print and prone to warping.

PLAABS
PrintabilityVery easy; no enclosure neededWarps; needs a heated bed + enclosure
StrengthRigid but more brittleTougher, better impact resistance
Heat resistanceSoftens ~60 °CHolds to ~100 °C
FinishingGlossy; sands/paints wellMatte; can be acetone-smoothed
Best forPrototypes, display models, low-stress partsFunctional, automotive, heat-exposed parts
